Pain is both a protective sensation warning us of danger and an expression of diverse disease states, including of the nervous system. Treatment of pain is often ineffective, associated with adverse effects, or has an abuse liability which has contributed substantially to the opioid crisis. New therapeutic strategies require both an understanding of the mechanisms of different pain states and the elucidation of how to reduce pain selectively, effectively, and safely. I will share how we are approaching this problem, by revealing the mechanisms of pain and developing a complex high throughput analgesic screening platform aimed at identifying compounds that can successfully manage nociceptive, inflammatory, and neuropathic pain.
