Mechanistic Basis of Parasitic Behavior Manipulation

Some parasites are able to manipulate the behaviors of their animal hosts to aid their own reproduction and dispersal. These natural “zombies” are not only creepy and fascinating, but have the potential to serve as model systems to better understand the determinants of animal behavior. To that end, our group uses an interdisciplinary experimental approach in the zombie fruit fly system to study the mechanistic bases of “zombie” behaviors from the level of molecules to neural circuits.
